MTO Approved BDE Curriculum and Licensed Driving Instructors
CADD offers the high quality driving instruction and driver training for students in the Toronto, Markham, Scarborough, and Stouffville area. The standards for Beginner Driver Education (BDE) are defined by the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario.
Canadian Academy of Defensive Driving (CADD) meets and exceeds all of these standards and is an approached MTO BDE course provider.
Each of our instructors is fully licenced and insured by the Ministry of Transportation and CADD is constantly maintaining and revising our curriculum to meet the Ministry's changes and standards. Our up to date and detailed driving courses prepare our students to pass their road tests and become safe and effective drivers for years to come!

This is an introductory section that discusses some of the many driving situations you will encounter as well as some of the misconceptions about driving. This will provide you with all the basic information you need about driving, getting your driver's license, and how to become a safe and effective driver using the principles of defensive driving.
Road Signs and Laws
This section takes a look at the various road signs that you will encounter when driving. We cover the most common road signs such as stop signs as well as lesser known signs that you will needbe to become familiar with. Using informative videos and engaging discussions, we will also examine the repercussions of failing to obey road signs and traffic laws.
City Driving Techniques
This section outlines everything that you need to know about driving in the city. Topics include:
- Merging and safe lane changes
- Intersections, right of way, and uncontrolled intersections
- Pedestrian hazards, cyclists, buses, and emergency vehicles
- Parking techniques and parallel parking
- Proper signalling and changing directions
- Driving in heavy traffic, and understanding traffic patterns
- Potential dangers of city driving
Highway Driving Techniques
Here we will discuss everything that you need to know about safe highway driving, including:
- Safe entry and exit methods freeways
- The use of HOV lanes
- Lane changes and merging, and the passing lane
- Driving long distances and driver fatigue
This section examines the laws and impact that impaired driving has on road safety and the safety of others. We will discuss its impact on your motor skills, reaction times and ability to drive. Videos and an open and honest discussion about drinking and driving will drill home the importance of make the decision to never drink and drive.
Distracted driving has become one of the most serious issues with drivers today. We will discuss the importance of avoiding distracted driving, its impact on road safety, and what you can do to avoid distractions when behind the wheel.
Defensive Driving Techniques and Collision Avoidance
Here we will discuss how to be a safe and effective driver using defensive driving techniques as a proactive way to avoid collisions. We will discuss tips for anticipating potential dangers and how to avoid them if they arise.
This section of your in-class driver training examines how to properly use vehicle safety devices such as seat-belts, child seats, airbags and other safety features as well as the law regarding their use.
Road Hazard Recognition, Perception and Management
This section teaches you how toproactively identify potential road hazards and how to manage them effectively to ensure you can safety navigate around them.
Fuel Efficiency and Economical Driving
This section discusses the importance of driving economically and discusses the methods to conserve fuel while driving by discussing how to tires, brakes, fuel, vehicle maintenance and other aspects of driving impact fuel efficiency.
Here we explore how much of an impact that your attitude toward driving can have on your ability to be a safe and effective driver. We will look at topics such as fear, peer pressure, the role of advertising, and more, and how to maintain a positive driving attitude at all times.
Adverse Driving Conditions
This section outlines the proper methods to drive safely in a number of adverse driving conditions. Topics include:
- Night driving
- Winter driving
- Poor weather conditions
- Emergency situations

Collision Analysis and Defensive Driving Chart
Collision Analysis and the Defensive Driving Chart is the industry standard in defensive driver training programs in Ontario. The Chart outlines the principles of defensive driving; good driving practices and what you can do to improve your visibility as a driver to improve road safety.
The final section of your in-class driver training will help you prepare for your road tests. We will discussion everything that you need to know about your in car road tests, how to prepare, and tips for passing your road test.
